ASTM A179 vs A192 vs A214: which carbon steel tube?
A179 is seamless cold-drawn tube for heat exchangers and condensers. A192 is seamless tube for high-pressure boilers. A214 is electric-resistance welded tube for heat exchangers and condensers. All three are low-carbon steel; the difference is how the tube is made and the service it is written for.

When to specify each
A179 is the default for shell-and-tube heat exchangers, feedwater heaters and condensers where the duty does not call for stainless or titanium. The seamless, cold-drawn tube has a smooth bore and close tolerance and rolls cleanly into tube sheets, which is why it dominates exchanger retubes.
A192 is specified for boiler tubes and superheaters operating at high pressure, and covers larger diameters than A179.
A214 is a welded alternative to A179 for exchanger and condenser service. It can cost less, but many plant owners and design codes require seamless tube for critical exchangers, so check the datasheet before substituting.

Common questions
Can A192 replace A179 in a heat exchanger?
Sometimes, but the hardness limit is higher (77 HRB against 72 HRB), which can affect how well the tube rolls into the tube sheet. Always confirm with the exchanger designer before substituting.
Is welded A214 tube as good as seamless A179?
A214 is suitable for many exchanger duties, but seamless A179 avoids a weld seam and is usually preferred for critical service or where the specification requires seamless tube.
